I have no high expectation of this movie since it starred KathNiel. I thought it would be like any other Pinoy teeny movie. But for the love of Eiram I watched this movie.
This movie is more matured than their Pagpag movie. But of course, it still has the cliches of the Pinoy teeny movie:
1. The Main Characters - handsome/rich/ masungit boy and common/simple girl.
Why can't they be equal?
2. The Theme - the girl like the boy first and then she had her makeover which make him dumbfounded when he saw her. Then, the boy started to look at the girl differently and later fell in love with her.
Do we really need to have that makeover so that the boy we like would like us back? Can't they love us for who we are?
3. There was inconsistency with the time setting. I believed the story was set in the 80's because of their outfits and this was the story of young Richard and Dawn. How come they have beepers / pagers? As long as I remembered, pagers / beepers were so in when I was in 1st year college (year 1998).
Another thing is, if this really happens during the 80's, the age of Kenji, Athena, Kenneth and Kelay did not match.
4. The distance was very fictional. Legaspi is a twelve-hour travel by land but they seem to put it like you just came from Laguna or Bulacan. If you are not a Filipino or you are not interested much about your geography then you will not notice. But for a traveler like me, this is unforgivable.
Nevertheless, it touched me because of the unexpected twist. It is not the story of the characters of KathNiel but rather a story of young Richard and Dawn. I found myself laughing, crying and kilig at the same time. I guess, I am a sucker for the stories of the love that got away, unrequited love and second chances .
I wished that the story just ended when Richard and Dawn was seated on the bench as they looked at the horizon while Kathryn and Daniel were pleasantly talking in the background. The writer should have left to the viewers if the two end up together instead of forcing a happy ending with another airport scene just to make the KathNiel fans happy. It came corny to me.
Don't get me wrong, I still love the idea of love, i am still a hopeless romantic at some point, I just do not like movie endings that I can foretell. For me, stories do not need to end happily for everyone to say it is a nice movie.
